practicePRO has a new look, clearer navigation, and easier access to its valuable content.
The practicePRO program began in 1997 as a claims prevention initiative of LAWPRO, the professional liability insurer for Ontario lawyers. The program’s website has long been an excellent source of current risk management and law practice information. Announcing the site’s new and improved design gives us a handy opportunity to highlight its best practice aids:
- Checklists are valuable aids for all legal practitioners, ensuring critical steps or questions don’t get missed. Downloadable checklists provide key steps for a variety of tasks and transactions, including client intake interviews, ILA advice, drafting commercial agreements, domestic contracts and more;
- Precedents include useful templates for a law firm budget, technology usage policy, as well as a range of model retainer agreements, from a general agreement to retainers for particular areas of practice, e.g., contingency fee retainer agreement for personal injury;
- Claim Fact Sheets highlight the most common causes of malpractice claims for major areas of practice, including the top two areas for claims – civil litigation and real estate malpractice. Each area’s fact sheet gives common scenarios that lead to claims, as well as relevant risk management tips.
Other resources we regularly use to help practitioners include charts for Ontario limitation periods, technology tips and resources for unbundling legal services (limited scope representation).
