One To Watch – Bill C-27 Digital Charter Implementation Act 

With the quick rise of ChatGPT in November of last year, AI has become a prominent part of casual conversation. It is no surprise that the Government of Canada has also been thinking about Artificial Intelligence in the form of regulation. Bill C-27 or An Act to enact the Consumer Privacy Protection Act, the Personal Information and Data Protection Tribunal Act and the Artificial Intelligence and Data Act and to make consequential and related amendments to other Acts, was introduced in Parliament on June 16, 2022, about five months before the explosion of ChatGPT.

Family Legal Services and Paralegals: An Update

The Law Society of Ontario’s highly anticipated “Report on Family Legal Services Provider Licence” was released on January 21, 2022. The FLSP licence would allow specially trained paralegals to provide a limited scope of services in family law matters such as drafting legal documents and providing representation in court or adjudicative body.

One to Watch: Bill 245, Accelerating Access to Justice Act, 2021

Last week saw the introduction of the Accelerating Access to Justice Act, 2021. As its name implies, this new omnibus bill is intended to improve access to the justice system, reduce delays for Ontarians seeking to resolve their legal issues, and build on the rapid changes already implemented in response to COVID-19.

If passed, Bill 245 will introduce changes – some major, some minor – to over 120 existing acts. Here are a few of the key proposed amendments:
