Legal Research Lifelines in the Age of Information Overload

We are revisiting an older post in our Legal Research Survival Guide, Part 10 – Lifelines and Last Tips, and it occurred to us that Tip #4 is especially worth highlighting in today’s context of information overload.

Tip #4 – Use a lifeline has only become more relevant since the Guide was written in 2020. With the sheer volume of legal information now available, and the pressure students and junior lawyers face to find reliable answers quickly, it’s easy to lose time going down the wrong research path.

The core message holds: you’re not expected to do this alone.

If you’ve spent a reasonable amount of time (say around an hour, as a rule of thumb) searching without meaningful progress, it’s often a good idea to pause and reach out for assistance rather than pushing further in circles. Your “lifelines” can include your principal, colleagues, clerks, and, importantly, law librarians.

One of the most valuable supports available to you is a law library, which includes the Great Library of the Law Society of Ontario. In addition to the services we provide to licensees, we offer confidential research assistance to summer law students, articling students, and licensing candidates across Ontario.

A key point we want to emphasize is that when you use our instant chat service, you are connecting with a real Great Library law librarian – not a bot. It’s a direct line to professional research support from someone who understands legal materials, databases, and strategy, and can help you get unstuck efficiently.

Whether you’re trying to locate a hard-to-find source, make sense of legislative amendments, refine a research strategy, or decide where to start, reaching out early can save you significant time and frustration.

Don’t wait until you’re out of options and time. Use your lifelines sooner, and take advantage of the support available to you.
