Hello and happy Friday! We’re here today with a big resource announcement: LSO licensees and licensing candidates can now access HeinOnline’s World Trials Library and the American Law Institute Library on-site at the Great Library. Click through to learn what’s included in these valuable repositories, and how they can support your international and historical legal research.
For anyone navigating US legal research, we offer this gateway to reliable analysis:
American Law Institute Library
HeinOnline’s LibGuide on this collection provides an excellent overview of its many subcollections, including the indispensable Restatements & Principles of the Law. These are highly respected distillations of current and historical American common law prepared by the American Law Institute, whose membership comprises judges, professors, and practicing lawyers.
Restatements cover broad subject areas such as Contracts, Data Privacy, and Government Ethics, and are organized into chapters, titles, and sections. Each section contains a concise statement of the rule of law, along with commentary clarifying the rule, hypothetical examples, explanations of purpose, and recognized exceptions.
This is an incredibly helpful resource for anyone unfamiliar with American legal principles or seeking authoritative guidance on U.S. common law.
For a bit of fun (and still plenty of useful info), we bring you:
World Trials Library
This collection contains trial transcripts and other critical court documents, as well as trial-related resources that analyze and debate famous trial decisions. It also includes biographies of many of history’s greatest trial lawyers. Hein’s LibGuide for this resource is, once again, masterfully curated.
We especially recommend browsing the related HeinOnline blog posts to see how this database has been used for research. A few favourites include “The Salem Witch Trials: Casting a Spell of Hysteria” and entries from the Heinous Histories series.
We look forward to welcoming you at the Great Library, located at 130 Queen Street West, Toronto, ON, to explore these exciting practice supports.
